Day 8: Oban
The Golden Hebrides
Bring to me the morning |
That song may be about the Isle of Tiree but the sentiment rang true for our adventure this day! Today we traveled by ferry to the Isle of Mull and the Isle of Iona in the Hebrides.
The first ferry took us to Isle of Mull where we met our local driver. He drove us across Mull to our second ferry terminal. His engaging narrations made the hour and a half long ride feel like a snap and, as always, I took a million pictures of the beautiful scenery out the window of the coach as we drove by. A second ferry took us to the Isle of Iona. Anne described Iona, the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland, as, “a place to be and feel. It nourishes your soul.” She guided us to the recreation of the cathedral using our whisper phones then we were free for lunch and to continue to explore. Even for nerds like us, the cathedral was neat but the true peace of Iona came from its natural beauty. Watching the children play in the pristine sea, scrambling over jagged rocks to feeling the sand under my shoes and the warm sun on my shoulders, smelling the briny sea air, savoring the sounds lapping Atlantic, soaking it all in. A true slice of heaven. |

Back in Oban, we opted for at a Lebanese restaurant and had a lovely walk back to the hotel with a beautiful, dramatic sunset! (Coupled with Mark Knopfler's lyrics from "Piper to the End." We listened to Skipinnish's version many times on our trip courtesy of Anne.) We were not ready to leave Oban in the morning!
